Remaking Santa Monica
Let’s play a choose your own adventure game of architecture - ‘Remaking Santa Monica’ What happens to a neighborhood when we design a building? architecture design is an intricated process that involves many factors, and we tend to investigate each of them separately. In this studio we study micro urban narratives through understanding design as a whole.
We start from an existing urban block and design the future of it through new construction, gentrification, and market driven development. Depending on the decisions taken for each lot the whole bloc gets redesigned. Learning from the game industry the use the branching narrative logic as a tool for world building similarly to Super studio’s Twelve cautionary tales, we invited the audience to play an interactive game and design the future of a Santa Monica block.
This studio use game engines to craft an interactive narrative for a mixed use block in Santa Monica, each design leans to a new design of the block. We design these variations and augment them using augmented reality on physical models. We simultaneously develop an interactive game where we can see the multiple scenarios play out.

What occurs within a neighborhood when we undertake building design? Architectural design is a complex endeavor involving various elements, often analyzed individually. In this studio, we explore micro urban stories by viewing design as a collaborative process.
We begin with an established urban block and envision its future through new constructions, gentrification, and market-driven developments. Each plot's fate influences the entire block's redesign. Drawing inspiration from interactive storytelling, we employ branching narrative techniques to construct worlds and encourage participants to engage in an interactive game, shaping the future of a Santa Monica block.
Utilizing game engines, Santa Monica creates an interactive narrative for a mixed-use block, where each decision results in a different block design. These variations are collectively designed through interactive gameplay, allowing us to visualize multiple scenarios by combining a plan, a physical model of the block, and an 8-bit-style game.
Who are you Narrative
Narratives are a powerful tool to immerse our players into our game world. We look at precedents like Richard McGuire with his graphic novel, where a single image defines multiple temporalities. We immerse ourselves in city symphonies with Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell sequence of Ghost city where the camera pans through the busy city as a reflection on our modern world. Hito Steyerl writes about ‘choose your own adventure’ gamebooks and how their narratives might be of importance today as a game map.
We designed narratives to see this Santa Monica Block unfold and branch into new possible narrtives.
